Wisdom of Jimin

This has a certain deepness to it… especially for something that doesn’t make a lick of sense on first impression.  There’s a Waiting for Godot quality to this:

Is most powerful and the ingredient which is important is endurance. Thought tries. If not to be endurance and the fire and the water, to wish and not to exist. The human being will breathe so far from outer space and the place which is the possibility which will live only is only endurance. If there is not endurance and the living subject will not be the possibility of living. So is most powerful and the ingredient which is important is endurance. The person is strongest from in the animal. The person will be able to think. In because them science develops and makes the state-of-the-art weapon, each other fighting. Of course tiger should have been bought also the same fierce animal cannot to before the total with budging. The person will decrease and will think holds. So the person is strongest.

Yep.  I’m a good teacher.

This seems about right:

Just a beautiful commercial.

There’s no other way to put it… things are crazy here right now.  There’s nothing that Korea likes more than beating Japan in anything, and now they’ve got another chance.  I’ll say this, watching the game right now in my apartment, and I can hear cheering coming from outside.  The WBC is working…

Go Korea.

  • Just an update… if you think they’re not taking this seriously… I’ve seen more incredible defensive plays in this game then in any other game that I can remember.  That and a Korean player just broke his helmet on a Japanese player’s leg sliding headfirst into second.  And the dude’s still in the game.
  • I’m loving the cut-aways to Jamsil Stadium here in Korea… When they’re excited, they are incredibly excited.  When they’re depressed, the world just stopped.
  • It is so hard to get any work done while I’m watching this game… For me, there’s just so much relevant drama on screen.  I’m begging for a gapper right here… and nevermind.  Korea’s down to their last three outs.
  • Er… slight manager issue with Korea.  9th inning, you’re down by a run, and you put in a righty submariner to face Ichiro, only one of the best left handed hitters in the world.  Not surprisingly, Ichiro’s standing on second with a double now.
  • Wow… some more just staggering defense from Korea there.  They desperately need to get out of this inning without another run crossing the plate.
  • Excellent work to strand Ichiro at second.  Now it comes down to the last three outs… and all they need is a run.  What’s worse is that it’s getting dangerously close to the time I have to go to work.
  • Two on, one out, fifteen minutes until work and it’s a fifteen minute walk.  But it’s only a five minute taxi ride :) .
  • Yu Darvish is filthy…  Like a right handed Randy Johnson.
  • THEY TIED IT UP!!!

I realized that’s there’s more than a couple of you who can’t see the pictures from this weekend, so I’ll pop them all up here now, with additional commentary!!!  Enjoy:

Everland’s an interesting place… part theme park, part zoo… they definitely take the European style.  This place reminded me of Flamingo Land in England, just built on one giant hill.  Thankfully I’m used to that now… Continue Reading »

New pictures…

For those of you on Facebook, I just uploaded a bunch of pictures from my trip to Everland, the biggest amusement park in Korea.  It was fun… but it just so happened that we picked a beautiful day with perfect weather when they were deciding to work on two of their big roller coasters.  Bastards.  But there’s a good amount of pictures up, and here’s a taste:

Seriously guys… there’s enough foreigners around.  Ask us to proofread things once in a while.

  • The Korean announcers are like excited puppies on crack.  When anyone on Mexico swings and misses, even with no strikes, they let out a shout.  I don’t understand really anything outside of the Konglish, but it’s entertaining at least.
  • Giving up a single to Augie Ojeda must hurt.  He’s three feet tall.
  • It’s a small strike zone.  Ryu Hyun Jin is getting punished on it too… he’s had already a handful of strikes called balls already, and it’s just through two innings.
  • I’m a little surprised that this isn’t basically a Mexican home game.  With the game in San Diego and everything I can still hear the Koreans chanting “Dae Haeminguk,” basically “Go Korea.”
  • Lee Bum Ho- great name by the way- absolutely destroyed an Oliver Perez pitch, and the announcers went nuts.  I’m gonna have to try and find that on YouTube…
  • Next man up followed with a single, and the announcers went nuts.  There might be a theme here…
  • I really hope that it’s a Korea-USA final… That’d be good fun.  Be good to get on my students about that.  Seung Hee was already getting on me about having to root for Korea there… I pretty much told her no chance in hell.
  • She's a cutie

    She's a cutie

  • Wow… a stolen base… and guess what?  Yep, the announcers went nuts.
  • Adrian Gonzalez just lined a single off the pitcher’s toe.  That would hurt like hell.
  • I’m incredibly unhappy that I have to go to work.  This should be a national holiday damnit… Time to get ready.

It’s worth a watch… A nice way of understanding why everyone’s sweating it out right now.

Where you been?

That’s a good question.  I can’t say I’ve been particularly busy, and that’s part of the reason I think that I haven’t put anything up in a while.  The other thing is that I’m finding myself more and more addicted to Facebook, so that’s where I’ve been spending most of my time.  Also I’m finding that when I come home at night, I have absolutely no will to write anything.

But anyhoo…

Anyang’s becoming more respectable as the days go by.  I’ll be honest, I still like Ansan more just for the convenience factor, but those days are past.  I think I’m due for a night back at the Manhattan here soon, because those people are too great to forget.  And my mad darts skills are probably getting a little rusty.  Can’t have that.

I’ve spent the past couple of weekend’s just getting to know Anyang and some of the people that I work with.  Things are picking up, but one thing’s clear: There are two camps at my school.  There’s a group of 5 and a group of 7… I’m more in the group of 7 right now.  I like the way that sounds… it makes it sound like a nice secret organization or something.

So yeah, things are getting better here.  There’s just a different rhythm to life.

__________________________________________

Like I mentioned earlier, hockey’s started up again.  Couldn’t be happier about that, except I find myself in the unenviable position of goalie… If you check my facebook page, you can see two videos of me stopping shots.  Luckily the videos of me not stopping shots aren’t there at the moment, but eventually they’ll surface.

I wouldn’t call myself exactly a good goalie, but I make do back there.  I realized something fast… I’m not as nimble as I once was.  It’s either that or the pads are much heavier than I remember.  It hurts your pride a little bit when the ball goes in the net, but when you rob someone much better than you on a breakaway… oh that feels good.

So we’re two games into the season and the team’s 1-1.  We won our first game pretty handily: 5-3.  We scored fast and put then in a hole, and I played just well enough to keep us in it.  The second game… wasn’t so nice.  Got killed 5-1.  I relaxed a bit at the end of the start of the game and next thing I knew I had let in three goals.  The team we were playing was pissed about losing the first game, so they came out strong and I didn’t.  No big deal… it was nice to get that first win anyway.  Took a lot of pressure off.

So now my Sunday’s are back to being pretty much my favorite day of the week.  Hockey really gives me something to look forward to for the rest of the week.  The Mondays, like most Mondays, are terrible.  My body’s still not used to playing goal, so no matter how much stretching I do, I’m walking like a 90 year old man on Monday.  That and those pads only cover so much and some of these guys playing college hockey… so their slap shots are strong.  I have quite an interesting collection of welts on my arms and legs right now.  Hey, chicks dig bruises right?… wait no, that’s scars.  Well crap.

Speaking of chicks… I’m two months in with my girl Seung Hee.  She’s still an absolute sweetheart… quickie example.  Last Friday I went out with the people from work.  Ended up having a few too many and wasn’t feeling particularly human the next day.  We were supposed to go to a museum (my idea) which I nixed and pushed to today.  Instead, she comes over here with pizza, chips, and a coke to make me feel better.  We end up laying around watching movies all day…  She’s just the sweetest girl in the world.

I will say this… it’s really strange at times dating a Korean… culturally, there’s a big difference.  I’ll have to get into that later, because I’ve gotta go get ready for the museum trip that I bailed on last week.  National Museum of Korea… and the battery is working in my camera today.  At least it was when I checked.  So with any luck I’ll have some sweet pictures up soon.
